Why this journal. Why now.
Washington, DC is in a crisis that demands an immediate and intentional response.
In the summer of 2026, the District recorded a sharp rise in juvenile-involved violent incidents, with youth homicides and shootings concentrated heavily in Wards 5, 7, and 8. DC's Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement reported that young Black males between the ages of 14 and 24 remain the most impacted demographic — accounting for a disproportionate share of both victims and perpetrators of gun violence citywide.
The mental health toll on DC families runs equally deep. The DC Department of Behavioral Health reported a significant increase in youth mental health crisis calls in 2026, with anxiety, depression, and trauma-related conditions rising among school-age children across the District. Research from the DC Children's Law Center confirms that Black youth in high-poverty neighborhoods face compounding stressors — housing instability, food insecurity, community violence exposure — that directly erode mental health and academic performance.
Families carry this weight largely alone. Community organizations and school counselors report overwhelming demand and limited capacity to reach every young person who needs support. The gap between need and access remains widest in the communities that need it most.
The Journal to Journey difference
A powerful tool placed directly in the hands of young people at the exact moment they need it most.
Developed by Dr. Tasha Y. Berry, Executive Director of Phoenix Reintegration Group, this journal carries her story, her lived experience, and her proven framework for transformation. She built it from the inside out — drawing on years of work in reintegration, compliance, youth development, and community service across Washington, DC.
Every page reflects her understanding of what young people actually need: a safe space to reflect, a structure to grow, and a community that believes in their journey. Journal to Journey serves as a bridge — from where a young person stands today to where their potential can take them. It guides reflection, builds accountability, strengthens emotional intelligence, and connects youth to a larger support system through Phoenix Reintegration Group and its growing network of school, aftercare, and workforce development partners.
